Confidence is the key to success in many aspects of a job search, but none more so than the interview itself. Self-confidence shows employers candidates have the skills and abilities to do the job well and provide long-term return on their recruiting investment. While not everyone is naturally confident in such situations, there are a number of things you can do to prepare and overcome any interview jitters or nervousness. This will help you present yourself well and have a greater chance of impressing your prospective future employer.

First of All, Be Prepared

A well-prepared candidate is an employer’s favorite interview. Doing your homework prior to shaking hands with your future employer is the key to success, particularly in a job interview setting. Knowing the job description and requirements in addition to how your unique skills and work history fill the needs of your interviewer is critical. Hiring managers can always tell who is really invested in the job simply by their understanding of the job requirements and the company.

To avoid nervousness in a job interview, prepare both mentally and verbally in order to put your best foot forward. Holding a mock interview is a great way to practice your interview skills. If you don’t have a mentor or friend to practice on, try talking in front of the mirror. Review your resume and talking points until you are comfortable with what you want to say, because when the moment comes, you don’t want to forget key work experience because of nerves. Confidence is naturally created by preparedness. You know you’re a great fit for the job, just be prepared to tell an interviewer why.

Watch Your Body Language

Your body language also makes an impression on your interviewer and on your confidence level as well. Taking a moment to calm your nerves and put yourself in a more confident frame of mind before walking into your interview. In the interview, sit or stand up straight, make good eye contact and refrain from fidgeting in order to help make a positive first impression.

Don’t Forget to Breathe

If you are the type of person who starts breathing quickly and shallowly when stressed or nervous, take a moment to control your breathing, slowly inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Slow down to a slightly slower than normal pace to calm your body and focus your mind. Think about what a positive outcome for the interview would be, and what it would sound and feel like. This can help slow your speaking, calm jittery limbs and steady a shaky voice as well. You’ll soon be centered and calm enough to really put on your best show for an interview.
