Performance vs Growth Mindset

Leadership is not only for those who manage teams. It applies to every one of us and allows anyone to lead within their respective fields. In a general sense, a leader must know how to influence others and inspire positivity around them.

However, being a leader is not an easy task. It is a meticulous and difficult road that requires resilience, determination, and passion.

Great leaders have certain perspectives that help them achieve success. Here, you’ll learn how to nurture both growth and performance mindsets.

What Makes Great Leaders?

Cultivating any mindset takes time and constant improvement. Setbacks happen all the time, and they might discourage you. However, if you want to achieve peak performance, you must prepare yourself for any obstacles. A great leader once said,

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill

Maintaining high levels of emotional intelligence and healthy mental well-being is key to this. If you want to achieve higher success, don’t settle for less, and don’t let any hardship hinder your growth.

Performance Mindset vs Growth Mindset

These two concepts are not opposing mentalities. Rather, they go hand in hand. High performers often embody either of these mindsets or a combination of the two.

The Performance Mindset

Leaders with a performance mindset believe that anything can be achieved through hard work.¹ Despite having adversaries, they pursue success.

This mindset teaches the brain to create positive attitudes. It helps you take actions that allow you to set goals, face challenges, and achieve your purpose. If you desire to accomplish strategic goals, whether in your professional or personal life, you might want to nurture a high-performance mindset. Here are some traits found in leaders with a performance mindset:

Self-Awareness

Being aware requires a deeper understanding of your own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors – and how they impact those around you.

This cultivates your approach to life, allowing you to identify patterns, make informed decisions, and respond deliberately. It is a conscious choice of continuous self-reflection, growth, and adaptation.

Focus

A high-performance mindset means focusing your attention and energy toward a specific objective. This allows you to maintain clarity on what you need to accomplish. It involves prioritizing your tasks, committing to them, and avoiding distractions. By improving your focus, you can amplify your efforts, maintain momentum, and ensure steady progress.

Flexibility

Despite being aware and focused, there may be obstacles that can hinder your growth. You must anticipate these challenges and adapt to your circumstances. Instead of dragging your feet, your first thoughts should be, “What’s the next step?”

Resiliency

By being flexible and adapting to change, you make yourself more resilient toward hardships. High performance is not always about achieving great things. It’s about bouncing back up, facing your problems, and getting back on track stronger.

Optimism

A high-performance mindset is incomplete without an optimistic mind. Everything ties up to this final trait and believing that there is a better tomorrow. By incorporating positivity into your life, you can be more enduring and adaptive, allowing you to continue your journey against the odds.

The Growth Mindset

On the other hand, successful leaders may embody the Growth (or Learning) Mindset. It focuses on progress by taking one step at a time. While the Performance Mindset centers on reaching goals and handling setbacks, the Growth Mindset thrives on challenges while considering them a catalyst for growth.

If you’re the type who likes to hone your abilities and unique talents, these traits will help you adopt continuous development into your everyday life.

Self-Belief

Being aware of your goals and actions is one thing. However, believing that you can achieve it is another. Many people today struggle with low self-esteem. According to Psychology Today, 85% of people worldwide don’t believe in themselves.² It could be caused by:

  • Physical appearance
  • Past traumatic experiences
  • Personal and family situations
  • Lack of achievement
  • Social comparison and media influences

However, self-belief is healthy and important. By believing in your capabilities, you already take the first step towards achieving your goals.

Inclusivity

A great leader with a learning mindset is inclusive. Take note of those around you. Learn how to serve their needs, listen to their thoughts, and come to agreements.

Not everyone experiences things the same way. An easy situation for one may be difficult for another. So, be mindful of others and their unique experiences.

Taking Action

The definition of growth doesn’t include returning to square one. Challenges are opportunities to take action. Whether it’s to find solutions or to enhance an existing process, commit to improving yourself and those around you.

Preparedness

Since anything can happen along the way, you have to be prepared for any outcome. Whether it’s a minor setback or a significant loss, you must expect the unexpected.

This allows you to be ready when the inevitable comes. Having a proactive mind allows you to organize your plans accordingly. By having contingency strategies, you allow a margin of error. So, when it happens, you’re already prepared and equipped to tackle the unexpected.

Living in the Moment

What happened in the past can no longer be changed. If you want to improve things, focus on the future. Mistakes happen, and it might affect you and those around you. However, it will only do more harm if you don’t let it go. So, live in the moment and focus on what you have left. Utilize your resources and make sure to create a better outcome.

Leadership at Work

Both the growth and performance mindsets are powerful aspects of leaders. But how does this play out in the workplace?

1. Set the Tone

Leaders act differently. They don’t push for personal agendas.³ Rather, they constantly innovate and shape the business. Whether you’re a company owner, top management, or an associate, you can emulate the same practice.

Look for ways to help your team or the whole organization succeed by inspiring them to act on an initiative. Influence decisions and managers to improve their processes.

Don’t forget to apply wisdom to your actions. Scrutinize every option. Consider the company’s budget and situation, alternative solutions, and align your actions with the company’s strategic vision.

2. Align with the Organization

Aligning your actions with the organization can be tricky. The technical aspect is a straightforward path. However, the people aren’t. This is why company initiatives and change processes often falter during the execution stage.

To inspire change, you must reshape the work environment. Don’t make drastic changes, expecting everyone to be immediately on board. Make it personal and meaningful. This way, you’ll inspire people to accept the new direction and not force it into your organization.

3. Mobilize Your Teams

High-performing individuals care more about collaboration than output. The idea is to focus more on each other’s psychological well-being; coordination and execution will follow.

Your team can only do its best if everyone is connected, not simply working side by side.

For those leading their own teams, be on top of things. Consider not just everyone’s technical prowess but also their character, behavior, and capacity. When you have a clear system, every member can easily follow and act as a whole.

4. Engage with Your Coworkers

Inspiration always comes from the top. As leaders in your own ways, engage with your colleagues. Build strong relationships with one another and push each other to reach a common goal.

Don’t underestimate the element of friendship. You have to deliver and create results – and the same goes for those working with you. Start by creating an environment that drives the company toward the future.

  • Why are you doing this initiative?
  • How does this objective contribute to the business?
  • Will it elevate team performance and productivity?

5. Work on Your Personal Growth

Leadership doesn’t end with managing your teams. You also need to lead the most important element: Yourself.

As a leader, you probably have a lot on your plate. What will it take for you to prevent specific concerns from overtaking your other responsibilities?

First, you have to manage your time and energy. Learn how to compartmentalize each component of the business.

Second, you have to lead by example. Show consistency and authenticity in your own initiatives. How will those around you follow if you’re breaking your own rules?

Lastly, be an effective leader by embracing servant leadership. Your responsibilities, the organization, its values, and all the stakeholders are bigger than you. Show gratitude and stay grounded. That’s the embodiment of a true leader.
